Sinus Surgery

Sinus surgery is a type of surgical procedure performed to treat chronic sinusitis, a condition in which the sinuses become inflamed and swollen for an extended period of time, causing nasal congestion, headaches, facial pain, and other symptoms. The surgery is usually recommended when other treatments, such as medications, nasal sprays, and irrigation, have failed to provide relief.

There are several types of sinus surgery, and the choice of procedure depends on the severity and location of the sinus disease. The most common type of sinus surgery is endoscopic sinus surgery, which is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the use of an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera attached, to visualize and remove diseased tissue and open up the sinus passages.

Other types of sinus surgery include balloon sinuplasty, which uses a small balloon to dilate the sinus openings, and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), which is a more extensive form of endoscopic sinus surgery that involves removal of tissue and bone to open up the sinus passages.

Sinus surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, and patients may need to stay in the hospital for a few days after the procedure. Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery and the individual's health status, but most patients can return to normal activities within a few days to a few weeks after the surgery.

While sinus surgery can be very effective in treating chronic sinusitis, it is not a cure, and patients may still require ongoing medical management, such as regular follow-up visits with their ENT doctor and the use of medications and other treatments.
